Breaking New Research in Support of CBD

From opioid addictions to weight loss, researchers are actively exploring ways CBD can be a tool in combatting common health issues.

I’ve always been fascinated by what really helps busy people feel better and less stressed. It seems like every time you turn around, there is a new solution to our modern epidemic of chronic stress, pain and insomnia, but does anything actually work? In my own experience as a busy mom to two boys stuck at home during a pandemic, CBD has been an absolute life saver - and this is coming from someone who eats, sleeps and breathes self-care.

I started taking CBD in 2017 after a brand sent me some to try and share with my audience on my Instagram page. Within two weeks I noticed how much less reactive I was to situations that normally knocked me off my footing and caused me to emotionally react. I also slept better than I had in years, and when I awoke the next morning I felt so much more refreshed and mentally ready for the day. I think it’s true that you don’t fully understand something until you experience it, and I had to try CBD myself before I would ever have bought into the hype - even when the hype was backed by a multitude of vetted and peer reviewed scientific studies.

I know so many people who are hesitant to try CBD, or think that it’s a just another overly expensive supplement, so to them I say try it for yourself for at least two weeks, and write down any and all subtle changes you feel along the way. If you are more prone to reading the science first, there are myriad of exciting studies already published about the promising effects of CBD on common chronic health issues, and a few more which I detail below. Stress isn’t going away, but we have the amazing ability to adapt when presented with new and empowering knowledge. Happy learning!

Study 1: Opioid Addiction/Pain - In 2019 the National Institutes of Health released three million dollars for studies on the use of CBD for chronic pain. The University of Utah will administer CBD extract in pudding to people with lower back pain and scan their brains to see how it affects the pain-signaling pathways. (Podcast interview with one of the leading scientists behind this study coming soon!)

Study 2: Brain Injuries - More than 2.8 million Americans sustain brain injuries each year. A 16 million dollar Florida study suggests CBD had a positive effect in improving cognitive function in mice with concussions. It may assist recovery by deactivating receptors that release glutamate, which is an inflammation causing chemical that kills brain cells.

Study 3: Weight Loss - CBD has been shown to reduce appetite, increase metabolism and convert white fat to brown fat which helps it burn off more easily. It is also suggested that by reducing anxiety people tend to eat less, make better food choices and exercise more.

Study 4: Eczema - CBD possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-itch qualities and could make an effective treatment. Dr. Robert Dellavalle at the University of Colorado School of Medicine states that CBD treats itch well especially with seborrheic dermatitis, a disease affecting half of Parkinson’s patients. He said, “CBD is a wide-open horizon with tremendous potential that needs to be investigated.”
